A Barbican is a fortified entrance gateway for a castle or city walls. The model allows you to build a detailed, working model of a barbican with a retractable drawbridge, sliding portcullis, openable double large doors with smaller pedestrian door and a working onager on the top. The top of the Barbican is removable much like a lid and allows access to the interior. Machiolations on the upper level accomodate murder holes which allowed defenders to drop rocks or pour boiling hot oil onto an enemy attempting to break through the doorway. The barbican set comes with two modular wall units with wooden hoardings on the upper level. These hoardings were installed when a seige was expected and provided extra cover to the defenders.
