The "Cavallino Rampante" The story of the rampant horse is simple and fascinating. But when Ferrari began to compete, the legislature forced the participating cars to be painted in the colors of the flags of the country they belonged to. That also explains why the color of Mercedes is silver and Bugatti (which are French and not Italian) is blue. Red is the official color of the Ferrari competition, but there have been some exceptions: The 158 F1 cars of Surtees and Bandini, for a short period of time were painted with the blue and white colors of the NART, as a sign of protest from Ferrari with the sporting authority.
